About

Who is Dwayne Hoover?

On paper, he’s a team leading Oracle certified DBA with over ten years of experience doing mostly Oracle and SQL Server DBA and development work.  On older paper, he’s a dean’s list regular with a few degrees.  And on even older paper, he was your typical gifted math and science whiz kid who spent way too much time tearing apart electronics in his room.

In real life, he’s a budding entrepreneur who wants a position in a company (or his own) that is actually doing something fun and cutting edge.  He’s been getting bored with his current position and has taken the masochistic approach of volunteering for such high profile tasks as enterprise wide single sign-on initiatives, customer facing data warehouses and advanced replication and real-time ETL tasks using Oracle’s GoldenGate tool.  That’s him, he gets bored and gets himself neck deep in something he’s barely touched before…often emerging as the go-to guy for said technology.

Why does this page even exist?  He’s looking for a new job, business venture and/or selling himself on the black market.  He wants billions of rows of data, not millions.  He wants a million users, not ten thousand.  Most importantly, he doesn’t want to beg a system administrator for a 1TB bump in space or grovel at the feet of an overzealous procurement director for a better laptop with SSDs and a bigger monitor.  In a nutshell, he wants big challenges, big machines and big results.

What does he know, really?

Dwayne is a data guy.  Give him any database and he’ll master it in a fraction of time that it will take most people to achieve competency.  Geographic distribution, flat files, clusters, Hadoop and MapReduce do not intimidate him.  His experience in Oracle E-Business Suite (ERP), Oracle Business Intelligence (BI) and various LDAP and identity management technologies has given him a firm footing in the right way to run a business from the inside, the right way.  He’ll never claim to be a programmer, but give him some broken code written in JAVA, C#, PHP, C, any database based procedural language or even Pascal (yeah I just wanted to write that somewhere) and he’ll debug and modify it to (mostly) do what it should be doing.  And then he’ll find a developer to give him a proper beat down and best practices speech.

Why hire him?

He’s a smart guy.  He knows his stuff.  He’s not afraid to talk to people, manage a team, run a project or cheerlead for the betterment of his organization.  He has exposure to just about everything and what he doesn’t know, he probably has a friend somewhere that does and is used to him bothering them.  He’s a team player, never says that something cannot be done and will be an asset to your company.
